So, how does an Everyman’s tarot from the 15th century read? From my point of view that is always the root question. Is a deck useful and helpful? Can it provide you and your clients with insight and assistance? You can have a deck with artistic merit and no oracular voice. I have a box full of these decks.
In using the Rosenwald Tarot over the past couple of weeks, I got the feeling that they were playing with me! There was some indescribable sub-text or laughter. So, I proceeded to have a dialogue with the cards about themselves in three rows of three:
My question / inquiry: Please explain yourself!
The response: (Emperor, Pope, Popess) Why? I command; I don’t explain myself to a reader over 500 years later. I hold an orb, a scepter, a key. I know power – temporal, religious and occult. I control armies, have the key to Heaven and lots of secrets! Explain yourself to me and I’ll see what I can do!
Well I thought I should explain myself, so I laid out another row of cards:
(Empress, Judgment, Hanged Man) I have an orb like the Emperor too! But I am more concerned with not breaking it, not with an army. I am more concerned with Heaven and not your key. Just take my money please and give me what I want!
The response – another row of three cards:
(Star, Hermit, Chariot) Thank you for being honest. I will be honest with you. Young or old, you yearn for perfection and peace. I will give you a measure of that in the Star. Here you are! Thank you for paying attention. Think about that well.
